SCHOOL: IPEM Nš 104 "Arturo Capdevila"- CRUZ DEL EJE - CORDOBA- ARGENTINA WORKING TEAM: Teacher Coordinator: Inés Gil de Ringuelet Teacher: Norma Lozano Students: Ivana Soledad Olmedo, Carola Viviana Romero, Claudia Susana Avendaño, Cristina Claudia Avendaño. The mesquite tree (Prosopis sp.), is a worthy representative of the Argentine and American autochthonous flora. It is a kind of tree that performs as an ecological dominant, therefore it preserves ground and water resources of the great Argentine phytogeographical region named "Bosque Chaqueño". It has also many uses like food, agriculture and technological ones that allow obtaining additional benefits through its rational use. It is an important natural resource in our planet, we should preserve it avoiding its destruction. In order to protect the mesquite tree we must first know it and this implies seeing it as a whole, pointing out three of its aspects: cultural, technological and ecological; then we can divulge it. The cultural aspect of the mesquite tree comprises all the expressions within its protagonism in our folklore: myths, stories, customs, belief, literature, music and art. The mesquite tree's technological aspect refers to the many uses and products derived from this noble tree: from its stem and stalks wood, coal, firewood, tint and rubber can be obtained; from its fruit we get food and alcohol; from its flowers, honey. Its ecological aspect is treated in two ways: the mesquite tree itself and related to its natural environment (origin, geographical distribution, botanical description, natural habitat, effect on the environment); and the mesquite tree's relationship with men with whom it forms different production systems. Interesting data is also included: projects, research reports, protected areas, related entities, curious things, news and reflections. The following report intends to stimulate a creative inclusion of the mesquite tree in our daily life, education and technology, respecting its natural cycles and the environment where it inhabits, its own folklore and all those aspects that will assure its conservation. We must understand it is a contributor to the survival of our own species together with its renewed and renewable economical and ecological resources pertaining to today or to the distant future. |
